Women and blood donation — the honest answers

Yes, women donate. Intervals, haemoglobin, menstruation, pregnancy — what national guidance actually says.

Women donate blood safely across the world — including lakhs of them in India every year. The differences are small and sensible:

  • Interval: 4 months (vs 3 for men) — women’s iron stores are naturally lower, so the rest period is longer.
  • Haemoglobin 12.5+ — the same cut-off; the finger-prick test checks it every time.
  • During menstruation: generally acceptable if you feel completely well and pass screening; some centres prefer you to come after. Ask yours.
  • Pregnancy / breastfeeding: deferred — typically until 1 year after delivery and once lactation has stopped.
  • Hormonal contraceptives: fine.

The most common deferral among women is borderline Hb — fixed with 2–3 weeks of iron-rich eating (greens, lentils, jaggery, dates + vitamin C). Millions of Assam’s future donations depend on its women signing up.
