The unknown is scarier than the needle. Here is the entire process, step by step, so nothing surprises you:
Before you arrive
- Eat a full meal 2-3 hours earlier (never donate empty-stomached)
- Drink 2-3 glasses of water
- Carry any photo ID
- Alcohol-free for 24 hours; feeling well
Step 1 — Registration (5 minutes)
Name, contact, a few history questions on a form. ID checked. You get a donor card or number.
Step 2 — Screening (10 minutes)
A staff member privately reviews your answers: health, medicines, travel, tattoos, last donation. This is where honesty saves two lives — yours and the patient’s.
Step 3 — Haemoglobin + BP (2 minutes)
A finger-prick test (12.5 g/dL to pass) and a BP reading (around 140/90 or lower to pass). Clear both and you are on the donation couch.
Step 4 — The donation itself (8-10 minutes)
A new, sterile, single-use needle goes into your arm — one quick pinch. Then you squeeze a soft ball every few seconds while 350-450 mL fills a bag beside you. Most donors scroll their phones and are surprised when it ends.
Step 5 — Bandage + refreshments (15 minutes)
Needle out, pressure bandage on, and you are walked to the refreshment corner. Take the tea/juice and the biscuits — they are part of the medicine. Sit for 15 minutes; stand up only when you feel steady.
Step 6 — After
Water through the day, a proper meal, no gym or heavy lifting with that arm today, no alcohol today. Log it — the register tracks your interval and calls you back on the right day.
That is the whole thing. Thirty to forty-five minutes, four times a year, for a life.
