Assam Medical College Hospital (State Model Blood Bank)

Assam Medical College Hospital, AMCH, sits on its leafy Barbarua campus in Dibrugarh, and for most of upper Assam it is the hospital. Serious cases from Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar and the districts beyond, even from across the Arunachal Pradesh border, arrive here: the accidents, the complicated deliveries, the cancers, the children with thalassemia who need blood again and again.

Every one of those patients depends on the same quiet department on campus: the State Model Blood Bank, the licensed blood bank of AMCH, with component separation, one donation can be split into red cells, plasma and platelets for up to three different patients.

AMCH's story is the oldest in the region. In 1900, funded from the savings of Dr John Berry White, a British civil surgeon of Dibrugarh, the Berry White Medical School opened here, training doctors for the tea gardens and river towns of upper Assam when the region had almost no modern medicine at all. A statue of the founder still stands on campus.

In 1947, the year of Independence, that school grew into Assam Medical College, the first medical college in Assam and in all of Northeast India. GMCH Guwahati came in 1960, Silchar in 1968; Dibrugarh had already been teaching medicine for decades. Walk in during hospital hours with a photo ID. A nurse checks your haemoglobin with a finger prick, asks a few health questions, and if all is well, the donation itself takes 8,10 minutes. Men can donate every 3 months, women every 4. Voluntary donors are the entire supply, why hospitals ask families for "replacement" is simply that there aren't enough of you yet.

Bring the requisition slip, the doctor's paper that states the blood group and component needed (the slip, explained). The bank crossmatches donor blood against the patient's sample before issuing; that final check is what makes transfusion safe, and it takes a little time.
