Assam Blood Donor

Indicative charges · verify with your centre

What does a unit of blood cost?

Blood itself is never sold in India. What hospitals charge is a processing and testing fee, and it varies. Here are the indicative bands, so no number can shock you at the counter.

What should always be free

The donor's side is free, always: donating blood, the health checks before it, the snack after. If anyone asks a donor for money, it is a scam, here is how the scams work.

About the patient-side numbers

Charges come from each bank's rate list, processing, grouping, crossmatching. Government schemes (Ayushman Bharat, state waivers) often cover them. When a bank quotes you, ask for the printed rate list; that single question stops most overcharging.

Whole blood / PRBC (red cells)₹0, ₹1,000₹750, ₹2,500
Platelets (random / single-donor)₹0, ₹2,000₹1,500, ₹6,000
Plasma (FFP)₹0, ₹1,500₹1,000, ₹3,500

Indicative ranges seen across Assam and Indian centres, rates are set by each facility and change. Always confirm the current rate with your hospital's blood bank. Government schemes (Ayushman, state waivers) frequently cover or waive these charges for eligible patients.

The two numbers that never exist.A price tag on the donor's side: no one is ever paid to donate. And a counter price you pay in cash to a person: processing fees are billed officially. Cash demanded by an "arranger" is the definition of a blood scam, report it.

Why the charges exist at all

The blood was free. What you pay for is the journey it takes: screening kits for HIV, hepatitis B/C, syphilis and malaria; the group testing; the sterile single-use bag and tubing; the centrifuge separation; the cold-chain storage; the crossmatch lab work. That pipeline costs real money, the regulation exists so it is billed transparently to the hospital bill, never cash-in-hand, and never to the donor.

The search you probably came from

"How much money do you get for donating blood in India?", the honest answer is zero, by law, and that is the design: paid blood was banned after it made the supply dangerous. Read the full story in what blood costs in India and how blood scams work.
