You’re carrying around a private water tank you never think about. It weighs more than your laptop, your phone and your shoes combined, closer to two litres of milk and then some. Blood is the body’s largest fluid organ, and knowing how much you have explains a lot: why donation is safe, why weight matters, and why drinking water before you donate isn’t just polite advice.
The headline numbers
A useful rule of thumb: blood volume is roughly 7–8% of your body weight.
That works out to about:
- 5 litres for an average-sized adult
- Around 70 ml per kilogram of body weight
So the number isn’t one fixed quantity, it scales with you. A 50 kg person carries around 3.5 litres; a 90 kg person carries 6.3 or more. Children have proportionally similar volumes but absolutely smaller ones, which is why paediatric transfusion is dosed so carefully.
Of that volume, a little over half is plasma (the liquid we cover in plasma explained), and most of the rest is red cells, the oxygen couriers described in red blood cells.
Why the 50 kg weight floor exists
Blood donation centres in India (and worldwide) set a minimum donor weight, typically 50 kg. It’s not bureaucracy; it’s arithmetic.
A standard whole-blood donation removes 350–450 ml. That’s a fixed amount, regardless of who’s donating. If you weigh 50 kg, you have roughly 3.5 litres total, and 450 ml is about 12–13% of it, still safe, but at the upper edge of comfortable. At 45 kg, the same donation takes closer to 14–15%, and the risk of dizziness, fainting or a slow recovery climbs.
The floor is really a proxy: weight is the quickest way to estimate blood volume at the donation camp, without scans or maths. It exists so that every donor walks out feeling fine, not so that some are excluded for fun.
Donation in context: under 10%
Put the standard 350–450 ml unit against the numbers above and you see why donation is safe for healthy adults:
- It’s under 10% of your total volume, a fraction your body handles routinely.
- Plasma volume is largely restored within 24–48 hours as fluid moves in from tissues and you drink normally.
- Red cells take a few weeks to fully replace, which is why the minimum gap between whole-blood donations is measured in months (in India, 3 months for men and 4 for women under standard guidelines).
Your body maintains blood volume within a tight range because blood pressure depends on it, which is exactly why the system has fast, well-practised responses to keep volume topped up.
Hydration: why drinking water matters
Blood volume and hydration are tightly linked. If you arrive dehydrated, your plasma volume is already low, your veins are less plump, and your body is more stressed by the donation, all of which raises the odds of feeling faint.
This is why donation staff tell you to:
- Drink plenty of water in the hours before donating.
- Eat a proper meal beforehand (low blood sugar compounds the effects of low volume).
- Keep drinking and rest briefly afterwards, while your body rebalances.
It’s simple logistics: you’re donating from a tank, arrive with the tank reasonably full.
