Eczema and blood donation, can you donate?

Mild or well-controlled eczema does not stop you donating. An active flare, especially where the needle goes, waits until the skin is calm.

Usually yes, with a small check first. Mild or well-controlled eczema does not stop you donating. An active flare, especially where the needle goes, waits until the skin is calm. ## The short answer Donation needs healthy skin at the needle site, and flaring eczema there (or widely) can let bacteria in and hurts more than it should. If your eczema is quiet elsewhere and the inside of your elbow is clear, you donate normally. Creams and moisturisers are not a deferral. ## The usual wait Until the flare settles and the elbow skin is intact, commonly a matter of days to weeks with treatment. Nobody is turned away forever for most of these, the register will still be here when the wait ends. ## At the screening desk Tell the staff: Point out the eczema and show the insides of both elbows; staff check the needle site on the day. That conversation is confidential and takes a minute, it exists so the medical officer can clear you safely on the day. Everyone meets the same basics: age 18,65, weight 50 kg+, haemoglobin on target, feeling well today. Men donate every 3 months, women every 4, the rest rules, simply. Not sure about your case? Try the Can I donate? checker or read who can donate and the deferral list in plain words. Still weighing it? Is blood donation safe? and the honest side-effects list are straight answers, not brochure talk. ## The one line that matters The medical officer at the centre makes the final call on the day, with your name, your file and your actual reading in front of them. Use this page to walk in informed, not to overrule anyone.

People also ask

Can I donate blood if I have eczema?

Yes, if it is mild or controlled and the skin inside your elbow (where the needle goes) is clear and unbroken.

Do eczema creams or steroid creams stop donation?

No. Steroid creams and moisturisers are not a deferral, oral steroid tablets are different (see the steroids guide).

I am having a flare right now. What do I do?

Treat the flare first and donate once the skin is calm, commonly days to weeks. The centre decides on the day.
