Why patients need it

Burns, liver disease, and clotting-factor patients need plasma. It can be frozen and stored up to a year, unlike platelets.

How it's donated

Separated from whole-blood donations, or given directly via apheresis. Recovered plasma is frozen at the centre within hours.

Standard rules; apheresis plasma has extra checks. AB donors are the universal plasma donors.
