You cut your finger chopping vegetables. Within seconds the bleeding slows, a dark plug forms, and by tomorrow there’s a scab. You never think about it, but that instant response is one of the most sophisticated emergency systems in your body, and its front line is made of platelets.

Not quite cells, brilliant fragments

Platelets (thrombocytes) aren’t full cells. They’re tiny fragments that pinch off from megakaryocytes, enormous cells living in your bone marrow. One megakaryocyte can shed thousands of platelets, each one a small membrane-wrapped packet stuffed with the chemicals needed for repair.

Because they’re fragments, platelets have no nucleus and can’t divide. They live only 8–10 days in your bloodstream before being cleared by the spleen and replaced by fresh ones. Your body maintains a standing army of roughly 150,000–450,000 platelets per microlitre of blood, and rebuilds it continuously.

How clotting works: plug, then cascade

When a vessel is injured, repair happens in two waves:

  1. The plug. Within seconds, platelets stick to the damaged site, change shape, and clump together with one another. They also release chemical signals that recruit more platelets. This forms a soft, temporary plug, the reason a small cut stops bleeding almost at once.
  2. The cascade. Meanwhile, a chain reaction called the coagulation cascade kicks off. Clotting proteins in your blood (most made by the liver) activate one another in sequence, like dominoes, ending with strands of fibrin weaving through the platelet plug. The result is a tough, stable mesh: a proper clot.

Each step amplifies the next, which is why the system is fast, and why a single missing or defective clotting factor (as in haemophilia) can make bleeding hard to stop.

The five-day problem

Here’s the catch that keeps blood banks awake at night: platelets can’t be frozen or refrigerated the way red cells can. Chilling them makes them clump and lose function. They must be stored at room temperature with gentle agitation, and even then, they last only about five days.

That razor-thin shelf life means platelet supply is always a few days from empty. Stocks must be continuously replaced; there’s no warehouse of backups. Every weekend, holiday or flood that disrupts donation drives shows up within days as a shortage.

Dengue: Assam’s recurring platelet crisis

For Assam, platelets have a specific and urgent meaning. Dengue (which circulates during and after the monsoon) can crash a patient’s platelet count, and severe dengue with bleeding is a real risk. Hospitals see surges of patients needing platelet support precisely when seasonal illness is knocking out donors themselves.
