The most common deferral at school camps is also the simplest: India’s donation age starts at 18. Not 17 with a permission slip, not 16 in special cases — 18, everywhere, for everyone.
The full age rule
- 18 to 65: eligible, if all other checks pass
- Above 60 for first-timers: a doctor’s clearance is typically required
- Regular donors: can continue to 65
Age is checked with ID at registration — a camp cannot waive it with a teacher’s nod, and neither can a hospital.
Why 18
Donation takes 450 mL from someone whose body has finished growing. Under-18 bodies are still building their own reserves, and consent law treats minors differently on procedures with any risk. The rule is conservative by design, and it is uniform — there is no “mature for your age” exemption.
What you can do before 18
- Volunteer at camps — registration desks, donor care, convincing seniors to come
- Learn your group — a basic test at any lab; you will know your card before your first donation
- Spread the word — one student convincing three friends of age is worth more than one donation
- Plan your first donation — the day you turn 18, walk in. Some of our best donors started that week.
Eighteen comes eventually. The patients will still be waiting — and so will the chair with your name on it, metaphorically.
