Donor response checklist: what to do after you tap accept

You accepted a request — now what? The donor's checklist from accept to donation day: confirm, prepare, donate, recover, log it.

You tapped accept. Here is everything after that, in order — the checklist that makes you the donor families remember.

Right after accepting

  1. WhatsApp the family — the button is right there on the accept screen. First message: your name, when you can reach the hospital, and “I will not ask for anything.”
  2. Confirm the details — hospital, ward, the component and units, the needed-by timing. Miscommunication wastes the whole loop.
  3. Know the centre’s timings — blood banks close (usually early evening); a donor at 9 PM finds a shutter.

Before donation day

  1. Self-check your eligibility — interval cleared (90/120 days)? Well? No new tattoo (6 months)? Alcohol-free 24 hours?
  2. The day before: full meal, good sleep, 2-3 extra glasses of water
  3. Carry a photo ID — centres verify age
  4. Plan the day — take the morning off if you can; never rush a donation between meetings

At the centre

  1. Honesty at screening — the form protects the patient and you. Answer everything truthfully.
  2. Donate, then rest 15 minutes — take the refreshments; stand up slowly
  3. No gym, no alcohol, no heavy lifting with that arm for the day

After the donation

  1. Tell the family it’s done — the relief call is part of the gift
  2. Log it on the register — the system pauses you and brings you back exactly when you’re eligible again
  3. If you can — one follow-up message a week later. “How is the patient?” That question turns first-time donors into lifetime donors.

You just did the rarest ordinary thing in India. Thank you.

People also ask

What do I do immediately after accepting a request?

Message or call the family (WhatsApp button on the accept screen), confirm hospital, ward and timing, and carry a photo ID on donation day.

What should I check before going?

You meet the interval (90/120 days), you're well and fed, and the hospital's requisition is in order — the ward confirms it.

What if I accept and then can't make it?

Tell the family immediately and ask them to keep the request open — they will find another donor. cancelling honestly is always better than not showing.
