Yes — with one of biology’s strangest twists. Your blood contains DNA, but not where you’d expect: the DNA lives in your white blood cells, while your red cells — the majority — contain none at all.
The red cell sacrifice
Red cells start life with a nucleus like every cell. Then, during their maturation inside your bone marrow, they eject it. A mature red cell is a flexible haemoglobin-filled sack with no nucleus and no DNA — pure oxygen-carrying machinery. The sacrifice gives them their soft, squeeze-through-capillary shape and more room for oxygen cargo.
Where the DNA actually is
White blood cells keep their nuclei — one white cell holds a full copy of your genome. A drop of blood contains thousands of them, which is why blood at a crime scene is as good as a tissue sample for DNA profiling.
The transplant question everyone asks
“Whose DNA is in me after a transfusion?” The donated white cells (few, and mostly broken down during storage) are cleared by your immune system within days. A transfusion changes your blood supply, not your identity. Your DNA remains yours — your children remain yours, forensically and spiritually.
The donation footnote
Every unit you donate carries white cells with your DNA — which is precisely why donated units are tested so aggressively (for infections) and handled as medical products. Your DNA never enters the patient’s body in any lasting way; your haemoglobin, however, walks around in a stranger for weeks, doing exactly what you lent it for.
