Eligibility

Can TB patients donate blood?

Active TB defers you; fully treated and recovered, you can donate again after a clear interval. India's TB reality, stated without stigma.

India carries the world’s largest TB burden, so this answer matters to more donors than any imported guideline admits. Active TB defers you. Cured TB does not disqualify you for life.

Active TB

While on treatment — or sick with untreated TB — you cannot donate. Three reasons stack up:

  1. Your body is fighting an infection; 450 mL is the last thing it needs
  2. TB medicines are strong and long-course (six months minimum) — donation on top strains recovery
  3. Untreated or partially treated infection is exactly what screening exists to keep out of units

After cure

Complete the full course (stopping early is how TB returns harder), get your doctor’s confirmation of cure, regain weight and strength — and you are eligible again. TB history with documented treatment is not a permanent bar; declare it and let the centre confirm.

The stigma sentence

TB carries social weight it does not deserve. Millions of Indians complete treatment and live entire healthy lives — and donate blood again. The register cares about your current health, not your past X-ray.

People also ask

Can I donate blood with active TB?

No — active tuberculosis is a deferral until you complete treatment and recover fully.

How long after TB treatment can I donate?

Once your course is complete, your doctor confirms cure, and you have regained your strength and weight — most centres accept you after a settled recovery period.

I had TB years ago and was cured. Can I donate?

Yes — cured, completed-treatment TB does not disqualify you. Declare the history; past TB with full treatment is not a lifetime ban.
